Air India Express Passenger Falls Sick

The incident unfolded on Tuesday evening when boarding for the flight commenced around 7:20 PM. Passengers immediately noticed the aircraft cabin was extremely stuffy upon entering, with no functioning air conditioning system.

After approximately 15-20 minutes of passengers enduring the uncomfortable conditions, the aircraft began taxiing toward the runway at approximately 7:45 PM.

During this critical pre-takeoff phase, a female passenger started feeling severely unwell due to the heat and nearly lost consciousness.

The flight crew promptly halted the takeoff sequence and returned the aircraft to the terminal. The aircraft was docked with an aerobridge. Medical personnel quickly attended to the affected passenger, who received immediate medical assistance.

Other Passengers Frustration

Karan Jain, a passenger on the flight, detailed the situation to the Times of India: “Once we boarded the flight, we found that the aircraft was extremely stuffy, and there was no air conditioning. After around 15-20 minutes, the flight started to taxi towards the runway. Just then, a female passenger started feeling unwell due to the heat and almost fainted. This resulted in the aircraft turning back and parking with one of the aerobridges.”

While the affected woman was removed from the aircraft and received medical attention, the remaining passengers endured nearly two hours confined to the still-hot cabin.

Only after multiple complaints did the flight crew connect a ground air conditioning unit. They then permitted some passengers to stand on the aerobridge for relief.

Meanwhile, maintenance engineers attempted to repair the faulty air conditioning system without success.

Ongoing Discomfort

Another passenger, Avi Sharma, described the situation: “The female passenger who had suffered a health scare was deboarded from the aircraft while we were sweating inside.”

The ordeal finally ended around 10:00 PM when all passengers were disembarked and escorted into the terminal building. By this point, passengers had spent approximately two and a half hours in challenging conditions.

Official Remarks

Air India Express (IX) released an official statement addressing the incident:

One of our flights from Pune returned to the bay before take-off due to a medical situation on board. The guest was promptly attended to by the airport doctor, found to be stable, and cleared to return home, accompanied by a colleague. Our team provided all necessary assistance to the guest throughout and extended a full refund for their flight.”

The statement confirmed that the aircraft could not operate due to technical issues.

The airline offered all affected passengers either rescheduling options to future flights of their choice or complete refunds if they preferred to cancel their bookings.

According to Air India Express (IX), the affected woman passenger was examined by an airport doctor and found to be in stable condition. She was subsequently cleared to return home and departed the airport accompanied by a colleague.

This incident highlights the critical nature of functional climate control systems in aircraft cabins. Especially during India’s warmer months when ground temperatures can reach uncomfortable levels. The failure resulted in not only a medical emergency but also significant delays and inconvenience for all passengers.
