PARIS- An onboard confrontation involving a passenger requesting water moments before landing on an Air France (AF) flight has sparked widespread discussion about passenger conduct, airline safety protocols, and cultural legal norms.
The incident, which occurred just before the plane landed at Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG), led to police intervention after the passenger took unauthorized photos of crew members following her denied request. The woman later accused the airline of racism on social media.

Air France Passenger Water Request
During the final minutes of an Air France (AF) flight’s descent into CDG, a female passenger demanded water while the cabin crew were already secured in their jumpseats per standard safety procedures.
Crew members declined the request, prompting the woman known online as Celrants to photograph a flight attendant without permission. This action breached both French privacy laws and Air France’s internal policies.
France’s Le droit à l’image law explicitly prohibits photographing individuals without consent, especially in confined public settings like aircraft cabins. When asked to delete the photo, the passenger initially refused, prompting staff to request police intervention upon landing.
The woman was met by heavily armed officers and detained at the aircraft door. While no official charges were reported, the situation has fueled debate online.
According to PYOK, the incident quickly gained traction after Celrants posted TikTok videos using hashtags such as #discrimination and #racism.
Flight attendants are instructed to prioritize passenger safety over service during final descent, a phase considered critical by aviation authorities. Once the landing checklist begins, cabin crew must be seated and secured, ending all in-flight service, including drink requests.
Passengers unfamiliar with these protocols may misinterpret refusal of service as rude or dismissive.
However, the crew’s response followed airline procedure. Experts note that while empathy is important, safety compliance is non-negotiable, especially in jurisdictions like France with strict civil codes.

Public Reactions
Online reaction has been mixed. Some users accused the passenger of entitlement, suggesting her demand was inappropriate given the flight phase.
Comments such as “She wanted a cup of attention, not water,” and “Just next time, bring a bottle of water with you,” reflected public frustration.
Others questioned whether involving law enforcement was excessive. However, taking unauthorized photographs of airline staff in France carries serious legal implications, even if not widely understood by international travelers.
Airline Safety and Local Laws
This incident underscores a broader issue: passengers often assume uniform policies across global airlines.
However, local laws, such as France’s privacy protections, can vary significantly. Seasoned travelers are advised to familiarize themselves with the cultural and legal norms of their destination or airline to avoid unintended infractions.
Respecting crew instructions, especially during critical flight phases, ensures not only personal safety but also legal compliance. Regardless of one’s flying history, unfamiliarity with jurisdiction-specific rules does not exempt one from consequences.
