DUBAI- Aeroflot (SU) flight from Dubai (DXB) to Moscow (SVO) descended into chaos when a drunken passenger forced an emergency landing after attempting to smash a window mid-air.
The incident, involving 38-year-old Roman Pakhomov, ended with him restrained by fellow passengers and later detained by authorities.
Aeroflot Flight Emergency Landing
The quarrel began when Roman Pakhomov, reportedly intoxicated from alcohol he had brought on board, started verbally abusing crew members and passengers.
Witnesses on the Aeroflot Boeing 777 described the scene as chaotic, with Pakhomov screaming, kicking, and lashing out. Passengers and crew initially restrained him using seatbelts and plastic handcuffs under the aircraft captain’s orders.
However, the situation escalated when Pakhomov broke free of his restraints. He then attempted to smash a window with his fists, prompting the captain to make an emergency landing at Heydar Aliyev International Airport (GYD) in Baku, Azerbaijan.
The flight remained grounded for 2 hours 45 minutes as authorities detained the disruptive passenger.
Following his arrest, Pakhomov claimed to have no memory of the incident, attributed to his intoxication.
Authorities in Azerbaijan are conducting an investigation to determine further actions. Meanwhile, the flight continued its journey to Moscow after the nearly three-hour delay.
Disruptive passenger incidents not only endanger lives but also lead to significant financial losses for airlines and inconvenience for passengers.
These events underline the need for robust pre-flight checks and immediate in-flight action plans.
Similar Incidents
Earlier this December, a similar case occurred on an EasyJet (U2) flight from Morocco to Glasgow. A drunken passenger became so disruptive that the flight had to be diverted to Faro, Portugal.
Videos captured by passengers showed Portuguese police escorting the individual off the plane amidst applause from relieved travelers.
According to witnesses, the man was verbally abusive, spitting at flight attendants, and had a history of aggressive behavior at the hotel before boarding.
Such cases have raised alarms within the aviation industry, prompting calls for stricter regulations on alcohol consumption and passenger behavior.
